Transforming an Underground Passageway into a “Garden” with Faux Greenery

A Station Redevelopment Project Creating a Calming Space for Passersby
|Gran Emio TOKOROZAWA – Phase 2|

Underground station corridors are often dominated by utilitarian design, prioritizing pedestrian flow but lacking warmth. This can unintentionally heighten stress and fatigue for commuters. In the large-scale renovation of Gran Emio TOKOROZAWA, a station-linked commercial facility directly connected to JR Tokorozawa Station, faux greenery was introduced into underground circulation zones to create a sense of nature. Following the environmental design plan, INCROCCE incorporated “garden-like” green installations throughout the space—especially in basement-level areas—bringing a sense of refreshing surprise and calm to daily movement.

Property Details and Spatial Concept

This project was part of the station-wide redevelopment associated with the JR Tokorozawa Station complex. Within the broader interior renovation, the basement zones—often overlooked—were transformed with garden-inspired installations. By placing greenery along pedestrian paths, the space offered an experience akin to strolling through a natural setting, even in an underground environment.

Interior Design Challenges

  • Designing lighting and layout to make faux greenery appear natural in a windowless, underground space

  • Ensuring safety and maintaining walkway widths despite heavy foot traffic

  • Maintaining visual consistency with the overall design theme of the entire facility

Proposal

The underused areas were transformed into indoor gardens centered around faux greenery. Leveraging the existing lighting layout, installations were arranged to create dynamic shadows on leaves and branches—enhancing the basement’s unique play of light and shade. Anti-soiling treatments and secure construction methods ensured easy cleaning and ongoing maintenance.

Implementation and Installation Details

Materials: Faux greenery and natural wood (UV- and fire-resistant)
Wall décor: Artistic frames arranged with dynamic, irregular spacing for added visual movement and texture
